Long Range Data Transfer Automation

(Togo, 2021)

project details

Project Name: Long Range Point to Point Data Transfer System
Location: Togo (rural and semi-industrial areas)
Year: 2021
Aim: Enable long-distance data communication in the fields of electricity, water, agriculture and logistics
Technology: RF/Lora/ISM band + low power consumption control systems

Project Description

With this project, which was developed to transfer industrial data to central systems in regions with limited infrastructure in Togo, automation points that perform long-distance wireless data transfer between 5-20 km were established.

The system enables real-time data exchange between two ends, allowing wireless data transmission from points such as:
• Water wells and storage systems
• Agricultural sensor networks
• Electricity production points
• Logistics/transportation stations
to centers.

Technical Casting

Hardware Components:
• Lora / RF 868 MHz modules
• Microcontroller-based data acquisition unit (ESP32 / STM32)
• Solar panel + lithium battery power
• Sensor inputs: analog, digital, modbus supported
• Measurements such as water level, temperature, humidity, voltage, pressure
• IP65 protected outdoor box

Software Features:
• Real-time data collection and transmission
• OTA (Over-the-Air) update support
• API structure integrated into the central control panel
• Encrypted transmission protocol for data security
• High efficiency with low data size

Targeted Gains
• Operational visibility in isolated areas
• Reduction in maintenance costs (up to 40%)
• Increased efficiency in agriculture (sensor-based irrigation/tracking)
• Systems operating independently in regions without energy infrastructure
• Data-based decision-making mechanism (especially public/cooperative in areas)

Investor and Partnership Potential
• The project has created a model for similar infrastructure-free regions
• Low cost per piece (module set: ~100–150 €)
• Wide range of application areas: agriculture, energy, water, security
• Offers a scalable model for investors (pilot -> dissemination)
• Partnerships can be made with municipalities, development agencies, NGOs

Future Plans
• Applicability studies in Benin, Burkina Faso and Ghana after Togo
• Mobile application integration (alarm, report, graphics)
• Satellite-supported backup data channel (for emergencies)
