project details
Project Description
This project, developed in the Netherlands, focuses on a movable system prototype that allows solar panels to follow the sun throughout the day. The project aims to maximize energy production by allowing the panels to receive sunlight at a more vertical angle throughout the day compared to fixed-angle classical systems.
Technical Specifications
Mechanical System:
Single-Axis Tracking
• Daily tracking in the East–West direction
• Movement with motorized linear actuator
High Wind Resistance:
• Automatic protection mode transition (panel moves to horizontal position when wind exceeds 45 km/h)
Ground Type Compatibility:
• Suitable installation to concrete or steel anchor system
Electronic System: Sun Sensor (LDR or photodiode based)
Control Card: Microcontroller based direction control (example: STM32)
Energy Supply: Solar or grid supported
Manual/automatic changeover switch
Performance Targets
• 15–30% more energy production compared to fixed systems
• More effective operation at low sun angles in winter months
• Production opportunity in early morning and late evening hours
• Post-project: Position optimization according to cloud movements is targeted with smart algorithm
Prototype Test Process
Test Location: Rural South Holland region
Test Period: Tested for 4 seasons for 9 months
Comparison: Parallel production measurement with fixed system of the same power
Results:
• Up to 27% additional production in spring-summer
• 10% more efficient than fixed system in winter
• Investor Summary
Why Tracked System?
• Increased energy efficiency = shorter return on investment
• More production can be obtained from saturated sites for fixed systems
• Provides more sustainable production while reducing carbon footprint
Costs and Expectations:
• 1 MW tracked system installation: 20% more expensive than fixed system
• However, 20% more production per year provides 6–7 years ROI
• Long-term profitability increases with smart tracking algorithms
